Google+ plus Gmail…how to protect yourself

As recently as yesterday, Google introduced a new feature to Gmail that allows, at least by default, anyone on G+ send you email without having your email address.  To some, this is great as it will help them stay in  touch, however many more are probably wondering how to disable or at least limit their exposure.

Opting out of this, or changing who can send you email without your email address is very easy.  Ready?  Here we go…

First, open gmail and then start by clicking the gear icon at the top right of your inbox and then click settings.

Next, scroll down a little bit until you see the Email via Google+ section and then change your options in the dropdown.

You will have four options to choose from:

  • No One
  • Circles (people you have added on G+)
  • Extended Circles (friends of friends)
  • Anyone

We’re not sure what the default setting is as most people we have spoken with have had different settings when they looked.  Ours were all set to Circles, but others have had various results.
